Some of the Disadvantages of Emotional Eating

Many people tend to lean towards emotional eating when they are under intense stress or emotions like boredom, sadness, and poor family relationships. These people are known as emotional eaters. Emotional eaters firmly believe that eating is the answer to all their problems and that food is a great stress reliever. It gives them the energy they need. The point of caution is that too much dependence on food is not very healthy.

Most emotional eaters eat food as a measure of comfort, and their dependency often goes undetected until very late.

Women are more emotional eaters than men. Women tend to lean more towards salty, high-calorie, sweet and fatty foods. These types of foods are unhealthy and should be eaten in moderate portions. Emotional eaters, especially women, overindulge in these unhealthy foods. The most ironic part is that these comfort foods often make consumers feel guilty after the binge.

Several studies and research indicated a strong connection between stress and emotional eating that may be linked to brain chemistry. The fight or flight response to stress is also known to suppress appetite. However, in some cases of ongoing stress, people tend to turn to comfort food for relief. The ironic part is that this type of food only increases weight gain instead of reducing stress.

You can avoid continuing to overeat. The most important thing is to learn the difference between real hunger and emotional hunger. It’s also helpful if you can identify and avoid foods that trigger emotional hunger in you.

Emotional eating can be very dangerous to health and should be avoided at all costs. Too many comfort foods can increase the risk of obesity and other diseases. Not to mention the social unrest behind it. The right amount of exercise and a proper and correct diet can help you avoid overeating. Exercise is also a great way to keep busy so you don’t feel stressed. Regular lifestyle and exercise will help you maintain your ideal weight and stop overeating.
