Leadership Success: 7 Common Blind Spots
To be a successful leader, it is vital that you are aware of your strengths and use them effectively. While this may sound easy, we all have, to a greater or lesser extent, blind spots that get in the way of success. So what are the 7 common blind spots that can hinder your progress as a leader?
i need to be right
People with this blind spot are obsessed with winning or at least appearing correct at all costs. The problem is that this can alienate people or just create a host of enemies, which is not part of the recipe for leadership success.
Being too ambitious with goals
Set easy goals and they won’t motivate you at all. Set goals that are considered too big and you will just demotivate people. The challenge is setting goals that provide a real goal while also being achievable.
being too focused
We have probably all fallen into this trap at some point. Think of all those times when your downtime was focused on one thing: work. While there will be times when you need to go the extra mile, you should aim for some degree of balance.
expecting too much of others
Others are not you and even if you can move forward relentlessly, that doesn’t mean others can too. Strive to bring out the best in others without burning them out in the process.
Self-interests rather than organizational ones
You may have heard people say that no one is bigger than the organization. At the end of the day, the agenda and vision of the organization must prevail. Make sure that the results required of you as a leader are the key area of focus.
Look good at all costs
Leadership at the end of the day is all about delivering results. Getting results and maintaining great relationships will greatly increase your chances of success. Once you start focusing on looking good, you stop focusing on delivering results.
unable to accept mistakes
We all make mistakes. The key is to learn from those mistakes instead of concentrating energy on trying to deny that you make mistakes.
Bottom line: If you want to achieve the career and personal success you want, you have to be alert to your blind spots. So what blind spots might be hindering your success?
