With its rich heritage and beautiful scenery, Wigan captures the imagination of locals and visitors alike. A city in Greater Manchester in England, Wigan has a total population of 81,203 people and is situated on the banks of the River Douglas.
There are many things to see and do in Wigan. The highlight is the Wigan Pier. Made famous by author George Orwell in his book, The Road to Wigan Pier, this local attraction along the Leeds and Liverpool canal draws many tourists.
The church in the city center of Wigan is an impressive example of the ancient roots of the city. The church has been restored twice once in the 1630s and again in 1847. Trencherfield Mill is another popular destination that showcases the city’s long-standing relationship with the cotton industry.
At one point, Wigan was considered a dominant force in the cotton industry and remained viable in the field until the 20th century, with the closing of the last operational cotton mill in 1980.
Music plays an important role in the culture of Wigan. Many established artists came from the city, including The Verve, The Ting Tings, and The Witness. Wigan even achieved international fame when Billboard, an American music magazine, named Wigan Casino “the best nightclub in the world.” Unfortunately the site was destroyed by fire and was never rebuilt.
Today, Wigan remains a hot spot for musicians and other aspiring artists. There are numerous pubs and clubs in the city that serve aspiring musicians. The annual Haigh Hall Music Festival attracts 7,000 people a year and is just one of the venues that Wigan offers its artists.
And if music and historical culture aren’t of particular interest, Wigan is also home to the World Pie Eating Championships. This event has been ongoing for the past 15 years and has earned Wiganer the personable nickname ‘cake eaters’.
