What does it take to be a successful leader?

Anyone can take a leadership role. This happens through an appointment, election or self-selection. Taking the job does not mean that one is prepared or equipped to be effective or successful. So what does it take to be successful?

There are many ways that leaders consider themselves successful. Some are measured according to the power, wealth or fame achieved. Conversely, leaders can be judged by outcomes and results. Regardless, leaders are evaluated on how they go from being ordinary Joe and Jane to transformational leaders. There are three ways leaders go through the process to be successful and effective.

First, good leaders are attentive to the need for work-life balance. Without this approach, stress, exhaustion, or physical ailments could result. Working excessive hours or maintaining a relentless pace makes anyone out of place, let alone a leader responsible for the vision and direction of others. Leaders can be most effective if they develop a system for maintaining a regular schedule of personal commitments and professional obligations. Leaders can stay focused through exercise, hobbies, and quality time with support networks.

Second, successful leaders are committed to building relationships. Developed alliances and coalitions convey the ability to connect with others. Staying engaged, building trust, and strengthening collaboration demonstrates how leaders can make an impact. Successful leaders develop a relationship by serving as advocates, champions of a cause, idea, or perspective. To accomplish this, leaders develop ongoing relationships achieved through strong communication: writing and listening skills.

Finally, another important trait is that leaders are courageous. Having the inner resolve to explore uncharted territory, for example, is one way leaders thrive. Simply put, leaders have the guts to step off a traditional path and lead others. This tenacity also becomes clear when leaders push themselves beyond their comfort zone and stay focused despite uncertainty or fear.

With the commitment to implement a few simple steps, leaders can be highly successful.
