They are also assessed during an evaluation day, which takes place in Fine Arts West building during the spring semester.

This is where a good piano teacher can assist. Taking private lessons and practicing on your own are two ways to develop these skills. As you learn more about piano technique, you will gain more confidence in playing. Practicing with other musicians is also a great way to develop these skills.

At the University of Utah, students who choose to major in music are given the option of earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
Achieving a master’s in music involves taking two graduate-level courses. First, students are expected to complete a capstone project. Second, they are required to participate in a weekly seminar, which is devoted to the evaluation of teaching techniques. During this course, students will be assigned to a student teaching assistant, which is supervised by the instructor.
All music majors are required to take Keyboard Skills. This is a class that is taught in conjunction with MUSI 113. Normally, students will complete Keyboard Skills for one semester and then begin Keyboard Skills for a second semester. If they are music majors, they are given a fee reduction for taking this course.
Throughout their time at the University of Utah, students will develop a variety of technical and musical skills. Students will learn to read and write notation, play simple chord progressions, and compose short pieces in contrasting styles. During this period, students will gain experience working in ensembles and will acquire the leadership, collaborative, and functional abilities that are needed to succeed in piano performance.
