Top 5 Family Christmas Traditions

At Christmas, there is nothing more important than spending time with those we love. Whether it’s warming up by the fire after a day on the slopes or preparing delicious holiday dishes in the kitchen, being together is what matters most.

One of the best ways to do this at the holidays is to have magical family traditions that are carried on year after year. Not only does this create special Christmas memories for the youngsters, but it gives them something to look forward to every Christmas.

Here are some of my favorite family traditions of all time:

1. Every year on the first day of December, give someone special a new pair of Christmas pajamas to wear throughout the month. This is especially fun for kids, but they all love new pajamas! This is a good idea for older people too.

2. Plan to open a special present on Christmas Eve instead of putting all the presents away until Christmas day. This extends the fun and anticipation of opening presents at Christmas.

3. For a couple without children, why not celebrate the “12 dates of Christmas” instead of exchanging gifts? Plan 12 special outings together throughout the month of December. It can be dinner and a movie or a night walk around the neighborhood to see the Christmas lights. Not only is this a great way to spend time together, but it will also save you some money if you want to celebrate Christmas on a tight budget.

4. Pack the family in the car and drive around the neighborhood looking for the best Christmas light display. Have everyone vote for their favorite at the end of the night.

5. When your tired-eyed but excited children wake up on Christmas morning, tell them that no presents can be opened until everyone has sung their favorite Christmas carol. You will never hear a song sung so fast in your entire life! A lovely way to start Christmas morning.

Family Christmas traditions don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. They just need to be yours. And don’t forget the camera. A Christmas scrapbook full of memories is a must for any family.
