The importance of humor in magic

Humor has been a part of magic as entertainment ever since the first court jester dropped the fruit he was juggling. Almost all stage magicians will use humor in their repertoire, or at least use a joke to cover up a failed trick. If you ever feel like you’re losing your audience’s attention, then there’s nothing like a comedic trick to draw their attention back to you.

The Vanishing Bandanna is one of the oldest magic tricks ever performed; It’s also one of the most fun magic routines you’ll ever perform. Long after your show is over and your audience has gone home, they’ll still be laughing and talking about this hysterical stunt.

The Banana/Bandana gimmick has a bit of a questionable history; there is some controversy as to who exactly was the creator and whether someone else should be able to pull off this hilarious stunt. There’s really only one place you can buy this cheat, and that’s Hobbytron. This is the place where many of the famous magicians buy their information and magical paraphernalia.

For best results, this is a great way to start this hack. Describe to viewers that you belong to an Internet magic website that sends you magic lessons on CD. Tell your viewers that you received one in the mail today and brought it back to show them how you learn your tricks. Open the shipping box and remove a CD. Put the record in your player and make sure it’s loud enough for everyone to hear. After a brief musical introduction, a pleasant female voice explains that this is:

“The lesson of the disappearing handkerchief”. The voice tells you that you will need two accessories for this trick. A large square of dark cloth and a yellow scarf. As everyone listens to these words, you reach into the shipping box and take out a piece of dark cloth and a yellow BANANA, not a yellow handkerchief. That’s right, a banana, just like in the real fruit from the grocery store. At this point, some members of your audience are already laughing, others are whispering to their neighbor in confusion, and some are trying to hide their feelings of pity for their apparent stupidity. But you just keep a straight face and seem to listen intently as the voice continues to explain that this lesson is about “patting”; and instructs you to fold the yellow handkerchief and fade it into the dark square of cloth. You actually fold and mash the banana which will get a huge laugh response from the viewers. Even from those who may still feel sorry for you.

The trick ends with the folded and mashed banana disappearing into the square of dark cloth, which is in fact a traditional wizard cloth called Devils Napkin.

You provide the actual banana, but everything else is provided to you, and this trick is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, every time!

The vanishing handkerchief trick is nothing but pure FUN!
