Social Prejudice Exists: Marxism Review

“What made you think you could get your hands on my fiancée?! Look at me, you filth! What do you think you’re doing?” In the movie Titanic written and directed by James Cameron in 1997, he depicts the struggles between the social classes which shows how big the gap is between the upper class and the lower class. The story was a dynamic love story between a cheeky third-class boy and a high-class girl who was itching to break out of her cage. The writer/director was inspired by reproducing an event that is a better version of previous TV shows. Although he was not the director’s forte to write a romantic movie, he was able to produce a high-quality movie. This review will emphasize the social class struggles shown in the film.

The story began by introducing the current characters, where a deep-sea investigation was carried out to investigate and recover the treasures hidden under the ocean where the RMS Titanic sank. Then the elderly Rose recounted her experience on the maiden voyage of the Titanic until her dramatic sinking. After some time, it was narrated that Jack Dawson won two tickets for him and his friend through poker for the Titanic voyage. As the voyage began, Rose did her best to rebel against her pretentious fiancé and class-conscious mother of hers and decided to run to the aft deck of the ship where Jack successfully rescued her from jumping ship. As a reward for saving Cal’s fiancé’s life, she invited Jack to dinner at his first-class table. Jack took Rose to the third class where they danced the night away and enjoyed themselves along with the other immigrants. Rose discovered that Jack was a great cartoonist on the streets of Paris, so Rose asked Jack to draw a nude of her wearing only the diamond necklace. After some time, the Titanic hits an iceberg and the captain together with the other crews concluded that the “unsinkable” ship will sink. But James Cameron diverted viewers’ attention from the calamity that transpired, focusing on the struggle that Rose and especially Jack were experiencing. Cal set a trap for Jack, he was arrested and placed on the bottom of the ship. Rose had a hard time rescuing Jack, but Cal wasn’t done yet and went after the two with a gun, even if the water was already freezing cold. The upper-class people were loaded onto lifeboats that were only half full, while the lower-class passengers were locked on the lower deck of the ship because first-class people are the priority. Jack and Rose jumped off the boat and floated for hours. Rose survived the freezing water but unfortunately Jack did not. At last, Rose tossed the blue diamond necklace into the ocean.

From the beginning of the movie, Titanic showed a very disturbing conflict between the upper class and third class passengers. Starting from the characters, Jack Dawson who is a lower class passenger, and Rose DeWitt Bukater who is an upper class lady, it demonstrates the gap between the social classes. The story usually presents the idea of conflict over how people in higher positions treat lower class passengers. In fact, one of the scenes in the film portrayed a very serious matter on this subject. It was shown in the part where the ship was already sinking little by little and the crew is evacuating all the first class passengers while the lower class passengers are locked inside the ship to drain and also to prioritize the upper class ones. . Class passenger safety. This scene shows how massive social prejudice was back then in Europe. It takes power or superiority to be saved from disasters. It showed how inequality ruled the world and how devastating the effects are, especially on the well-being of lower-class people. It was seen in some scenes of the movie, that the lower class people suffered a lot in the sinking of the Titanic. This represents how the rich dictate society. The rich are the ones who manipulate everything and have the power to govern the marginalized. Therefore, the rich exploit the poor by preventing them from receiving their rights and the equality that is due to them. Unfair judgments of people make the world more chaotic and widen the gap between classes. Equality was nowhere to be found.

The movie Titanic, from its characters, script, visual effects, production team and the entire production, did a great job of giving the audience the satisfaction of its 3 hours and 15 minutes of drama/disaster movie. The actors and actresses gave their roles justice and delivered their lines with professionalism and passion, which added more flavor to the movie. The way they conveyed their roles was truly amazing along with heartbreaking sound effects that made the movie more vibrant and colorful. This movie is a blockbuster as it grabs the attention of its audience making it one of the most successful movies of all time. The romantic theme of the movie clicked on the audience or viewers of the movie. Everything went smoothly in the production of this movement, therefore I highly recommend this film for the current generation to watch as it contains very significant content and many life lessons. However, this movie is one of my favorite movies right now. Such a brilliant display of cinematography coupled with moral lessons.
