What can’t money buy? We all have experiences that go beyond what’s available to buy and are often the kinds of things we didn’t even know we wanted or couldn’t have imagined.
Reviewing them is a great way to tune in to the larger context of what is possible.
A big one for me was riding an NYPD Harbor Patrol boat through lower Manhattan and out to Liberty Island on a warm, clear summer afternoon in the pre-9/11 wonderland. I hadn’t even been to New York, let alone had time to think about how great the view would be from the water.
A friend of mine recently had the privilege of spending a couple of days with a famous writer, one of his heroes: talking, having dinner, drinking wine, doing yoga… all in a casual, informal way, as if he were a friend, although they had just met. It was not orchestrated and could not have been.
Another friend walked into the UCLA administration building, ready to face the red tape and possible additional requirements to re-enroll after a 15-year break, only to discover that her file was still in place and her units valid, and she was welcomed. . back with grace and ease.
Another friend was waiting for an overbooked flight. Her fiancee wanted to leave the gate area and return to the counter to begin making arrangements for a later flight, but she stayed where she was. There was no indication, none at all, that they had the slightest hope. All the other waiting passengers left. At the last minute, two passengers left the plane because one was short of breath. My friend and her fiancée rushed in and the fuselage door closed right behind them!
A common feature in all these stories is simply showing up. Not having everything planned and arranged in advance, but being open and available to whatever the Universe may have in store. So get in the habit of saying yes to things and introducing yourself. You have no idea what it can bring you!
