What exactly is a hipster? A hipster is the type who finds other forms of the popular, listens to indie music and wears ironic clothes. They usually have a sarcastic and ironic sense of humor, don’t answer a question directly, and usually reply with an obvious lie that is “smug”.
Hipsters enjoy making fun of current music (Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Rihanna, etc.). They enjoy music like M83, Grateful Dead, Electric President, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Jens Lekman, etc. They can also be found talking to their friends about bands they have never heard of. As a hipster you should never say you love all music because you will give the wrong impression of a hipster and seem like a wannabe, make sure you criticize some bands. Hipsters look forward to almost every show they can get their hair done themselves.
Unless you live surrounded by many other hipsters, the hipster lifestyle may not be for you, as most will insult you rather than understand you. Brooklyn is the best place to live for hipsters, that’s where most of them are. They also like living in Chicago as it is very cold and frigid, like most hipster attitudes. It’s okay for them to live in Los Angeles as long as they don’t fall into California culture.
So now that you have the low attitude, you need the burnout. Hipsters often shop at vintage websites, Urban Outfitters, thrift stores, and the Salvation Army. They do it because they want to show off the older retro clothing from the 50’s and 80’s.
Most hipsters will be caught wearing tongue-in-cheek t-shirts, probably a retro gaming character like Donkey Kong or old cartoons like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Smurfs, etc. T-shirts that have 80’s sitcom logos and black and white spandex t-shirts.
Hipsters definitely prefer to wear linen and cotton scarves, even when it’s not cold. Anything plaid or checkered will definitely work. However, Keffiyah scarves have been very popular. Don’t tie your scarf, let it hang carelessly around your neck.
Skinny Jeans: This doesn’t mean ’90s bootcuts. This means the pants are so skinny that they almost cut off circulation to the brain. They wear skinny jeans that are black, blue, or brightly colored.
For sneakers, hipsters definitely prefer converse over any other brand. They especially love high tops. Just be sure to beat them up a notch when shopping for a new pair of Converse sneakers.
For accessories, be sure to equip yourself with a messenger bag and Ray Ban sunglasses. Girls can also wear large and intrusive jewelry.
Once you have the right attitude and gear, people will definitely start noticing you as a hipster. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing really depends on your geographic area, you know?
