How to customize a women’s business suit

A good quality business suit can make you feel good, as it often carries a kind of confidence. Sometimes you feel more confident just putting it on. The right business suit gives people a professional impression of you before you’ve even said a word. However, sometimes when you move through the city center, you can give the impression of business people wearing uniforms, as if they all look the same. How do you avoid that?

The secret is in the accessories! Take, for example, a standard, black, wool-blend women’s business suit. To this outfit we can add a basic and fresh white blouse, a classic pearl necklace around the neck and a new and simple pair of leather pumps. This woman is beyond criticism, and every woman should have these standards on hand in her collection of professional business attire. But do you have to wear that every day?

Now let’s take the same suit and add a chic basic top in a bold color, like purple. Let’s put on a chunky necklace with big purple beads and a pair of purple foam heels. Yes, you heard me – I said purple shoes. This totally changes the original suit and some people won’t even realize it’s the same suit. Just changing the accessories gives it a whole new look.

So let’s look at a gray wool professional suit, cut to flatter your figure. Why not, this time, we added a striking red basic top, a bold, chunky layered red garnet necklace, and (yes, you guessed it) a pair of stunning red leather stilettos. Red is a powerful color and gives a new personality to the standard gray suit. For an extra dramatic effect, mix red and black.

The key here is color. The suit is the base on which you place the additional building blocks. But the color of these accessories is really what makes or breaks the outfit. Why don’t you go through his wardrobe and find a suit he hasn’t worn in a while, that you considered donating to a thrift store, and rework it in different ways? Take him to the mall and try different shoes, tops and jewelry on him. Maybe he was just sitting there waiting to be reborn.

Keep building sets of shoes, jewelry, and the standard basic top, in different colors. (You can also add purses and scarves to that trio of colors.) And when shopping for new outfits, make sure they match one of the accessory sets you already have. Good quality suits are expensive. But accessories can tolerate a budget compromise, if necessary. This way, you can make many unique and custom outfits out of the same basic suit, without looking like a uniform. Don’t be afraid to improvise; Brightly colored shoes are acceptable these days if chosen with good taste, and remember: the trend never changes if no one dares to set a trend.
