Like many anglers, I don’t have a lot of money to spend on my fishing gear. So when I want to add chunky fishing tackle to my collection, I always have to consider price. Over the years, I have found that Daiwa products offer an optimal combination of price and performance. For that reason, I’m pretty partial to them. Daiwa has a worldwide reputation for excellence, so choosing one of their products means you’re choosing superior fishing gear. Here is a brief review of a Daiwa reel I recently purchased: the Exceler S4000.

The Exceler range of reels are renowned for their superior performance and exceptional versatility. Regardless of the species you are stalking, from the lowly catfish to the noble pike, the S4000 will be a valuable ally in the fight. The product line features a precision molded body and rotor which means the reel will feel quite comfortable and be very durable. Durability is important to me, so I appreciate this feature on the S4000. The gear ratio is 4.9:1 and the reel has a wider spool, making it as powerful and functional as other fishing tackle in its class. This reel can spin 86cm of line with each turn of the handle, and also features Daiwa’s DigiGear2 system.

For around £79.99, this is a great piece of coarse fishing tackle that’s loaded with many of Daiwa’s well-known features, including TwistBuster2 which virtually eliminates line twist. The S4000 also has infinite anti-reverse and advanced level windage. The reel holds approximately 190m or 14lbs of test fishing line and weighs 14.1oz. I was pleased to learn that the design process at Daiwa uses the very latest in computer aided design technology, so accurate performance is virtually guaranteed. The reel body is made from a strong die-cast aluminum alloy body, along with a machined aluminum spool, both of which help to minimize overall weight. The S4000 has 7 ball bearings, 2 of which are CRBB (corrosion resistant ball bearings). Finally, the reel comes with a spare aluminum spool.

On a recent fishing trip, I had the opportunity to lend the S4000 to a friend who is very particular about his gear. Here are their comments:
