General information:

The Scarlet-breasted Parrot is also known as the Scarlet-breasted Parakeet, the Orange-throated Parrot, and the Splendid Parrot. This species is endemic to Australia.

Physical description:

It is about 8 inches long and weighs about 40g. The male has green upperparts with a bright blue head, scarlet breast, and yellow belly. The female can be distinguished from the male by the lighter blue coloration of her face and her green breast. The female scarlet-breasted parrot looks like the female turquoise parrot but has more blue on her face. Juveniles appear similar to adult females but have duller plumage. This parrot has a number of mutations including blue pair, sea green, and white breast.

Diet:

The Scarlet-breasted Parrot feeds on grass seeds, herbaceous plants, fruits, flowers and buds, and possibly insects.

Habitat:

This species is found in a variety of dry and arid areas in the Australian outback. Its habitats include mallee, mulga, open eucalypts, and forests where casuarinas predominate. The Scarlet-breasted Parrot has a range that spans the interior of South Australia and includes parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. It nests in the hollows of mallee or mulga, from a relatively low height to 8 m above the ground.

Reproduction:

The female usually lays three to five white eggs per clutch. The incubation period lasts approximately 18 days.
