Electrical cover plates can refer to two things, the first would be the plastic (or sometimes metal) ‘plate’ that is visible on a wall socket (outlet), the second is a protective cover plate for cabinets electronics.
I will talk mainly about the second one because they present two very important uses for people all over the country. First of all, there are two main types of electrical cover plates that are designed to protect electrical outlets.
There’s the slot version which is very similar to the plug on an electrical appliance other than it’s obviously not connected to anything. You just plug it in and it works because it creates a block that is very difficult to get into. They are used a lot for baby proofing houses because there is always the fear that a small child could stick their finger into one of the holes while it is on and thus get electrocuted. Seeing that the outlet is full, it is impossible to do it, it is also quite difficult to remove because the outer end is very flat and close to the outlet, which makes it impossible to remove when a child and difficult even for an adult.
There is also a cabinet protection version that is similar to a small box made of plastic or metal that is attached to the wall around the outlet. This is primarily used outdoors and is very popular when it comes to electrical cover plates because it protects outdoor electrical enclosures from harsh weather conditions.
