Characteristics:
Matt can easily be described as an American guy, guy next door, with overall good looks. He is a tall, athletic man with blue eyes and blond hair. For most of the pilot episode, he wears a red and black Mystic Falls Timberwolves jacket.
Personality:
Matt is a very loyal, protective and loving person. He is kind and caring, and always shows great concern for the health, well-being and virtue of his sister, Vicki. Despite his breakup with Elena Gilbert, he also lets Stefan know that he cares for her and that he would do anything for her. Due to his relationship with his sister and his irresponsible mother, he has started to grow up earlier and be more independent.

Elena Gilbert:
At one point, Matt and Elena were in a relationship. They separated due to the stress of her parents’ death because she needed to fix things. Matt tells Bonnie that he wants to continue his relationship with her, but thinks it is too late. Elena’s description of their relationship is “that childhood friend you start dating because you owe it to yourself to see if you can be more.” Elena also says that she did not have a passionate relationship with him.
Although he no longer has a relationship with Elena and realizes that they will never be together again, Matt tells Stefan that he would do everything he could for Elena. Apparently the two have known each other for most of their lives and did a lot of ‘firsts’ together. Matt also says that he was Elena’s best friend at one point.
Vicki Donovan:
Vicki is Matt’s older sister and he loves her very much – he stays with her while she recovers in the hospital, rushes to find her when she disappears a couple of times, and heads straight to Gilbert’s house to help when he finds out. she is in trouble.
Vicki tells Damon that her mother is often not around and that they never really knew who her father was. This suggests that the two siblings are all the other really has when it comes to a family. Matt is also probably the only person who really cares for Vicki. After Stefan erases Vicki’s memory at the hospital, she becomes very playful with him.
In a dream, Vicki calls him ‘Matty’ and also in a later episode when she’s in distress. This suggests that the siblings are familiar and comfortable. However, while Vicki is with Damon, she also suggests that to some extent she resents Matt for being the successful one who goes to college on a soccer scholarship, while she doesn’t have much of a future.
Matt definitely doesn’t seem happy when Tyler makes sexual advances towards Vicki and prefers that she be in a relationship with Jeremy Gilbert. He’s even willing to leave her and Jeremy alone while he’s supposed to be resting. Matt tells Elena that he thinks it’s weird that his sister and brother are dating because he’s Elena’s ex-boyfriend.
Tyler Lockwood:
In the pilot, Tyler and Matt are hanging out at Mystic Grill. Matt doesn’t like the idea of Tyler having a relationship with his sister Vicki. Matt is even more upset by Jeremy’s implication that Tyler was sexually forced on Vicki. Matt is suspicious of Tyler, suggesting that while they are friends, he is certainly not a close one. The two fight in the locker room during a soccer game, where Matt says he’s tired of Tyler’s bully nature. From this point on, it seems like they don’t hang out together, though Tyler tries to get closer to Matt to offer sympathy when Vicki goes missing and offers to help look for her. Their friendship seems to be on the mend when they start playing basketball together, they discuss relationships, and Tyler gets Matt to drive him home after a bad night at the school career fair.
Stefan Salvatore:
At first, Matt doesn’t trust Stefan due to Elena’s interest in him. However, Matt is chivalrous enough to introduce himself to Stefan rather than just ignoring him. After Vicki is attacked, Matt’s suspicions lead him directly to Stefan. Matt is so suspicious that he follows Stefan when he sees him in the hospital visiting Vicki and is upset when Stefan disappears. When Vicki disappears from Mystic Grill, Matt goes looking for Stefan and is openly suspicious of him. However, Matt becomes genuinely grateful to Stefan when he discovers that he helped Vicki return safely. Matt tells Elena that Stefan can actually be a good guy while playing pool. Matt seems to have regained enough confidence to follow Stefan’s order on Vicki when he doesn’t know how to help her as she turns into a vampire.
Caroline Forbes:
Matt says he knew Caroline since first grade, although he didn’t really like her. Damon verbally attacks Caroline so she gets drunk and talks to Matt about his problems. They become friends after Matt says he knows what it feels like to be alone. While it was difficult at first, Caroline and Matt begin dating. Elena and Matt’s dating history often makes Caroline jealous because they are still close.
Kelly Donovan:
Kelly is Matt’s mother; She is not at home much and often goes with her boyfriends. Matt says he can’t trust her and this shows that they have a remote relationship. However, when Matt helps his drunk mother home, she admits that when Pete left her, she came home for her children because she knew Matt would never leave. While Matt is willing to give him a second chance, the stresses of Vicki’s disappearance and Kelly’s subsequent actions provide the last straw for Matt. Matt scolds her even though she is heartbroken and cries. He tells her to go away and that life is better without her.
