Nintendo Wii and Wii Sports – Good for kids’ fitness?

The Nintendo Wii apparently puts an end to the concerns of recent years about the inactivity of children due to their interest in video game consoles. The Wii console really stands out from the rest with its revolutionary motion-sensitive controller, which actually requires movement in order to play.

The Nintendo Wii comes with the Wii Sports game, which includes tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing. In tennis, you’ll swing the remote like a tennis racket and lift it up to launch the ball into the air in a quick motion to serve just like the real thing. The other Wii Sports games work in a similar fashion by simulating controller movements for similar movements on screen. However, boxing is the only Wii Sports game to use the nunchuk accessory and is the most physically taxing game of all. To hit your opponent in the head or body, you will have to aim high or low with your blows.

There are three different activities with each game. In training mode, you will participate in random challenges, after which you will be assigned a fitness age, based on your performance. Sounds familiar? The Nintendo DS game Brain Training comes to mind… maybe a physical version?

The point here is that gamers are becoming more physically active without even realizing it; It could be said to have a ‘kill two birds with one stone’ effect, combining video gaming with physical activity, so given the ‘physical’ nature of the Wii, I wouldn’t be surprised if parents are rushing to buy Nintendo! Wii just to get your kids off the couch!

Another great advantage of the Nintendo Wii is that it appeals not only to children and teenagers, but also to adults, making it something the whole family can enjoy.

Could the Nintendo Wii revolutionize the way we play video games in the future? It will be interesting to see what Nintendo’s competitors come up with next!
