With most of the press, a lot of articles and essays have been written about the lock when focusing on the locksmith world, but surprisingly not many have been written when it comes to keys. Yes, a locksmith works with all kinds of locks and tools, hardware and other security devices, but a very important part of a locksmith’s job also relates to keys.
Without the key, the lock is simply a device that its owner cannot open or close. Most locks are stationary objects installed in the various types of doors that house them, padlocks, although they have the ability to be mobile, they are also quite docile by nature.
Current and higher quality car keys contain features that allow remote access, remote start start, can tell a car if it is okay to start and if it is not the correct key the car will not allow the engine or pump fuel to work.
While there are some amazing features in high-end vehicle keys, most modern cars have the lock and unlock feature, as well as a quality automatic alarm that alerts others that the car or owner needs it. While the security alarm doors will react when opened, the door does need to be tampered with. The key activated alarm system can be operated remotely or close by. Can your lock or hardware do that?
Master key systems are not called master key systems for no reason. It is the lock and its cylinder that have to be repaired and configured so that a single key acts as your master key and not the other way around. It is not a master lock system as mentioned, it is the key that is important here.
There are many times when someone wonders if they locked their doors to their home or their vehicle doors and common sense dictates that even if the door is open, it is closed. Locked doors in any home, building, or car generally deter those seeking to enter illegally as most assume they are locked, however when they have a moment of uncertainty and rummage through pockets and purses for keys this provokes make the scenarios more distressing. in the sense that lost keys, especially those without copies, completely negate the ability to not only enter one place, but several places.
Tampered or broken locks are serious, but key loss is more common and creates a sense of dread. When a key is broken or lost, the best person to call is a locksmith, as they have the right tools and know how to get it back up and running with duplicates.
A thief doesn’t break a key, a thief breaks a lock. Someone trying to gain access does not start or break a key the way they do a door or lock. In considering all of this, perhaps the key deserves a little more credit and thought than is currently being given to it.
