Is modern music too raunchy?

I, like many people, have always been a fan of music. I have always prided myself on staying up to date and keeping an open mind regarding new trends and styles. And while I’ve been able to train my ears to accept new sounds and genres, there’s one thing I haven’t been able to understand: the ever-increasing clarity of songs on the charts.

At the risk of sounding old, I just don’t understand why so many of these provocative songs can be played on mainstream radio during the day. Many of the lyrics are sexually provocative, contain poorly concealed clothing, or promote violence, alcohol, and drug use.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that musicians should preach or sing about love all the time, but there is a time and a place for everything. Obviously there’s a need for songs with a little more attitude, but they shouldn’t be on mainstream radio with thousands upon thousands of kids listening! And what’s worse is that a lot of these kids go and sing these lyrics, whether they know what they mean or not. Would you want your eight-year-old to sing about being drunk at the club like Lady GaGa or asking a rude kid if he’s “old enough” like Rihanna? I do not believe it.

I also like some of these songs, but I cringe when I hear the children sing these lyrics. Do there need to be better guidelines about what can and cannot be posted on the lists? I think so, and I’m sure many parents would agree.
