Fort Huachuca, AZ: Review of a Spouse
Knowing your next post is essential to quickly assimilate your new home. We all search on social media, Google the next post / city, and check all the links on the official website. However, we also know that all that research is not enough. No one, or anything, can tell you like another military spouse. So here is my review of Fort Huachuca, AZ.
1. Housing
Housing in Fort Huachuca is in transition. Therefore, it is difficult to make an accurate review of physical dwellings. However, every neighborhood has at least one playground and there are more located around the pole. This is ideal for families with children from toddlers through high school. The housing office is helpful and the maintenance does a good job.
Housing is limited at the moment, so many are living outside of their position in the city of Sierra Vista. This community is very friendly to the military and offers adequate housing for your BAH.
There is temporary accommodation available now which is quite nice. However, there is a new hotel under construction that promises to be very nice.
2. Services in the publication
The amenities in the listing are good. The commissary is fully stocked most of the time. There are two exercise facilities, one with a children’s play area. There are indoor and outdoor pools, as well as several community centers. There are few restaurants in the PX and the PX is moderate in size. The bowling alley is nice, but the movie theater has been closed. The educational center is nice and there are many classes offered at the Arts and Crafts center (ranging from toddlers to adults).
Cochise College has a satellite facility at the post, which is nice and convenient. There are two gas stations, one open 24 hours and a decent-sized thrift store. The ACS available is fantastic and highly recommended.
3. Services outside the publication
Sierra Vista is the community outside of the mail. It offers almost everything you need. What cannot be found in Sierra Vista can be found in Tucson (about an hour away) or Phoenix (less than 2 hours away). Kmart, Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, a mall, several sit-down and fast food restaurants, grocery and consignment stores.
There is no library in the publication so you must go to your local Sierra Vista library. It is big and very pretty. It also has a used bookstore where you can buy or get donated books for free.
4. Doctor
Fort Huachuca does not have emergency services or a hospital at the post. You must use urgent care, emergency room, and hospital services in Sierra Vista. However, they do have doctor’s offices available. It is efficient and the staff are friendly. You should make appointments about a month in advance. There are two pharmacies in the mail, as well as a massage parlor. Both have friendly and knowledgeable staff.
5. Childcare
There are several child care facilities offering full-time to hourly care and they are expanding. Get on the waiting list as soon as you know you are moving here. The lists are long. This also applies to SKIES classes.
There are also many off-site nurseries, both religious and non-religious. And there are also many parks and classes available. Many of these can be found on the city government site.
