Document-based: a type of decision support system

Decision Support Systems (DSS) are generally a collection of computerized data systems that support some decision-making actions. They consist of computer-based interactive systems and subsystems and are made up of few types. One of them is the document-based DSS. Decision support systems (DSS) are capable of presenting information in graphical form and include an artificial intelligence (AI) or expert system. This could be the goal among business executives or other potential knowledge workers. Systems and subsystems are used to help decision makers use data, knowledge, communication technologies, and models to complete their tasks.

Decision support systems are capable of collecting and presenting typical information such as comparative data figures, accessing information assets including relational and legacy data sources, consequences of various decision alternatives, providing past experience in a particular context, and project figures based on assumptions or new data.

There are various types of DSS including communication based DSS, knowledge based DSS, model based DSS, data based DSS and lastly document based DSS. Basically, the document-based type is the most common support application aimed at a wide user base. Its main function is to search web pages and find documents based on a precise set of keywords or terms. They are also specifically designed to turn documents into important business data. The common technological methods used to configure said DSS are through a client or server system or through the web.

Compared to the data-based DSS that relies on existing data in the standardized format that lends itself to database analysis and storage, the document-based type of support will make use of data that is not easily stored or standardized. Basically, there are three main categories of data used in the document-based DSS, namely the oral type or transcribed conversations, the video type or news reports and television commercials, and the written type such as memos, reports and emails. .

None of these data formats lend themselves effortlessly to standardized database storage and analysis, so managers will need some DSS tools to turn the data into something valuable in the decision-making process. The document-based support system is the latest division of study within decision support systems.
