Kincaid crafts a suspenseful story with “Something Special.” As part of the Class of ’85 Reunion Series, Jane Gray returns to Summerville to retrieve her uncle’s inheritance only to find herself in danger. Enter Andy Morgan. He is a cop who discovers that his attraction to Jane is just as strong now as he was all those years ago in high school.

“Something Special is a contemporary romance set alongside picturesque Lake Ontario. Summerville is a small, close-knit town. When Jane was young, she witnessed her grandfather kill her mother and grandmother with an axe. The event was traumatizing Jane and earned her the nickname “Crazy Janie. Andrew Morgan knew better. Andrew saw through Jane’s battlements, but it wasn’t enough. Jane became a NASA scientist working on the Mars rover project and Andrew became a He went to work for the feds.

Jane’s uncle has died, leaving her a small fortune in a safe deposit box. Jane is reluctant to claim her inheritance due to the circumstances surrounding her family’s death. She doesn’t want memories of her painful past. Andrew is also haunted by her past. He believes in his work and hates dirty cops. He also believes that he might have found one on the police chief.

When Jane claims her inheritance, she puts herself in danger. Will Andy be able to keep her safe? Will Jane and Andy get over their past hurts and take a chance on love? Jane and Andy dare to look for something special?

Kincaid wraps the reader in a web of mystery and intrigue as the story begins. The plot moves well, and Kincaid’s writing style is easy to read. The author uses a good economy of words to paint the picturesque town of Summerville. I felt like a resident watching the story unfold. Kincaid’s dialogue is sharp and witty, bringing a rich authenticity to the characters.

My favorite aspect of the story was the rich characterization. Jane is sad and tormented, but she is a career-oriented successful woman of hers and someone to look up to. She just wanted to turn the pages and give him a hug. Andy is heroic and determined. It was also fun catching up with the supporting cast that appeared in an earlier novel, “Something Else.”

The story is sophisticated for romance readers and the love scene embodies the fiery chemistry between the couple. “Something Special” will warm the reader’s heart and make him believe that love transcends everything, even the past.
