Advice for adjusting the baby for a happy baby

Here are some ways to keep your newborn baby happy and calm. It can be stressful to see your baby cry uncontrollably and you don’t know why she is crying. Hunger and medical health aside, it could be that they feel uncomfortable. Try these six tips for a happy baby.

1. Check the temperature

Especially in the first few weeks, your baby is used to a warm environment in the womb and may be very cold in the first 24 hours. Depending on the time of year, she may need more or less layers of clothing, ie; hat, rabbit mats or just a muslin blanket and T-shirt, a light cotton mat. You can check the temperature behind the neck or under the arms. When they’re a bit older, a general rule of thumb is for kids to have an extra layer of clothing than mom or dad. Do not forget the cap or hat for the sun.

2. Wind signals

Sometimes one way to tell if your baby has to burp is to look at the top of the mouth (between the upper lip and the nose); this area turns slightly grey/bluish. Put bubbles on their shoulder and pet/rub their back, most of the time they will burp. It becomes easier to notice this slight discoloration after a few months and with practice.

3. Use a cover on the stroller

Always be prepared for changes in weather when you go out in a stroller. Invest in a rain/wind and sun/shade cover. They also help keep small sticky baby flies and mosquitoes away.

4. Pacify the positive and negative aspects.

Much has been said about the positive and negative aspects of the pacifier. If you can get away with not having your baby have one, do so. If, on the contrary, the baby is better accommodated with a pacifier, then use it.

Don’t confuse giving them a pacifier though, with them really needing food. Sometimes a baby wants to explore with their hands and mouth, so a pacifier can be a disadvantage.

Don’t worry about what your friends and family think, if Bub is happy with a pacifier, chances are you’ll be happier and get more sleep.

5. Use barrier creams to prevent diaper rash

By using a barrier cream when you notice the area is a little red, you can minimize the chance of a nasty diaper rash.

6. Teething

The teething process can be painful for babies. Try rubbing your gums with your finger. Teething rings filled with water can be put in the refrigerator (the freezer is too cold) and the cold can be a relief. Teething gels should be used conservatively. Teething biscuits can be used, but should generally not be used until six to eight months.
