8 Ways to Recycle or Dispose of TVs and Electrical Appliances in an Environmentally Safe Way

We are all mindful of the environment and of corporate and personal responsibilities for its continued protection. With most Western countries in the midst of the transition from analogue to digital TV, plus the new 3D revolution, the proper management and disposal of legacy TVs is a timely topic.

So what options are available?

personal recycling

(1) Can this television be reused within the family? Second bedroom? Study? Den? Can you stay in the vacation home or the shack? How about a family member? An older aunt or uncle who wouldn’t mind a bigger TV? Although not perfect, getting rid of a smaller unit instead of a large one is still an improvement!

(2) How about at work? Ask around, people may be interested, especially if you’re willing to give it away. While you may not like it for a second bedroom, a colleague might. Do you know a young person who is starting to rent or buy a new house that could use it? Friends? Guys at the gym?

(3) Be inventive and creative. Don’t be afraid to ask, a simple “Do you know someone who might like a TV?” you will always get interest!

Community

(4) There are always options to donate to charity. Some organizations do not accept electronic products, but others do. Use the Internet or the phone book to call and ask.

(5) If you are part of a religious community ask its leaders. What about the local community school, senior care center, sports club, community center or shelter? Manufacturer Return Programs

(6) Several manufacturers offer take-back and recycling programs under an individual producer responsibility (IPR) mandate. Some examples include;

Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, LG, NEC and eBay

Don’t see the brand you need? Give them a call! And don’t forget that several major retailers also offer their own programs, so contact them too!

Recycling Institutions / Organizations

(7) If you’re still stuck, there are a number of organizations that can provide you with information, advice, or even the location and contact of recyclers or those who can safely dispose of electronics, including;

earth911
The Alliance of Electronic Industries
The Environmental Protection Agency
e-Stewards.org

(8) And remember, you can always call your local councilor, mayor, state or federal representative!
