To help! I’m getting married and I hate being photographed

It’s your worst nightmare. You usually manage to escape; sometimes you hold the camera. But on your wedding day there is no way you can avoid having your picture taken.

For the photogenic, it’s the ideal opportunity for them to have well-taken pictures that truly reflect their beauty, rather than the blurry, out-of-focus snapshots of Aunt Maud. For lovers of style, it is an opportunity to create a model portfolio with every carefully crafted detail from court trains to cathedral veils. Watch out for your drama queen friend’s Facebook profile to be dominated by a panning shot of them drowning in white satin, looking coy in a dramatic black and white setting. “It’s all airbrushed anyway,” you murmur, reaching for another chocolate chip cookie for comfort.

So what do you do if you’re getting married and you hate having your picture taken? Well fear not! Here are some survival tips for you:

1. Choose wisely.

Find a photographer who makes you feel relaxed. It is very important that you can be yourself on your big day. The last thing you want is for some obnoxious maniacal paparazzi to get in your way and boss you around! You must like him personally, not just his bag. They may have amazing photos, but if they annoy you, don’t hire them!

2. Be sure to discuss your requirements beforehand.

Tell them that you don’t particularly like being the center of attention and that you don’t want to be forced into all sorts of dramatic and awkward poses. If that’s a problem for them, you may need to reconsider if they’re the right photographer for you.

3. Don’t be afraid to take time off that day for a couple of takes.

This is really a great opportunity for you to spend some time with your new husband or wife, away from all the guests. If posing isn’t your thing, ask for candid shots of the two of you loving newlyweds chatting together, walking, maybe sharing a cheeky kiss. You’ll definitely find pictures to treasure in these types of shots – they’re the kind you’ll want to frame and hang on your living room wall.

4. Remember that you are going to enjoy your big day.

Even if you feel nervous, there is something so special about getting married that you can’t help but love it! Once the jitters of saying your vows are over, you can enjoy the celebration! You won’t often see so many of your friends and family all together under one roof. Do your best effort!

5. Know that you can say ‘no’.

It’s your wedding day, and if someone asks you to do something you’re not happy with, just politely decline. If family and friends are harassing you with their iPhones, don’t be afraid to smile and then make your excuses, and walk away to chat with someone instead of feeling like you have to stand there with a fixed smile on your face.

As much as you hate having your picture taken, if you choose a good photographer, you’ll get images to treasure for a lifetime that won’t age or lose their shine. You will be at your best on your wedding day, because you will be excited, elated and ecstatic. Don’t worry about how you’ll look in photos, just enjoy every moment of your special day.
