Sony and its OLED 4K 2018 offer
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early 2017, there was a notable addition to Sony’s line of televisions, as it introduced its first 4K OLED consumer model in a large-screen format. Without actually making the high-quality displays, Sony was able to launch its own offering using LG OLED displays in its new model.
Far from being a token effort, the Sony A1E had a powerful OLED display, offering everything you expected, but also with the infinitely cool ‘Acoustic Surface’ sound technology. Rather than opting for a conventional external speaker arrangement, they opted to use the smooth screen to generate sound, making it jump out of specific areas and adding realism to the viewer.
Second Evolution
Fast forward 12 months and Sony moves to Year 2 of OLED TV production with the announcement of the AF8 series, its natural successor. Most obvious at first glance is its external styling with a more “conventional” television layout, available with a 55 “or 65” screen.
Aside from being a bit more minimalist, the AF8 eschews the option of a futuristic stand in favor of a relatively straightforward metal center stand. This is all academic though, as like the A1E, the AF8’s real talking points lie in its image quality.
Visual brilliance
Still present in the latest Sony model is the visual quality offered by a combination of Sony’s proprietary X1 Extreme processor, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. All this to take full advantage of the capabilities of the OLED panel. Its precise control of color and definition creates stunning 4K images that really make you stand out from the crowd.
A1 updated
You will be forgiven for thinking about some aspects, that you were looking at the A1, as aesthetically speaking, it has not been modified much on the surface, apart from a few small styling adjustments like the aforementioned stand, which propps up the screen completely upright. . , in contrast to the A1, which leaned back at a 5-degree angle.
Exceptional audio
As the saying goes “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and the same can be applied to the A1E and its successor, the AF8. It retains the acoustic sound, the X1 Extreme and its Android operating system and indeed most of the features that made the A1E so popular in 2018.
At CES 2018, in Las Vegas, the A8F showcased every bit of the image quality seen by last year’s model, largely because not much has changed other than the outward appearance.
TBA cost
So far we have no word on exactly how much the AF8 will cost, but it is said that you won’t get much change from £ 2,000 for the 55 “model. A princely sum indeed, but a marked decrease in the launch price of the same A1. last year’s size, which was available for around £ 3,000.
