Management Culture: Bold and Innovative Strategies for Engaging Employees by Denise Moreland

Denise Moreland’s “Management Culture: Innovative and Bold Strategies to Engage Employees” is a welcome addition to the management literature. In an easy-to-read and refreshing style, Moreland writes about developing a positive workplace culture. It is a book for employees, bosses, and anyone else who wants to make their business culture more positive.

Each chapter begins with a scenario that doesn’t go as well as it could. After sharing his advice on the specific topic of the chapter, Moreland ends up sharing the scenario again, but by incorporating the ideas from the chapter, the scenario unfolds in a much more positive way. I thought these little scenarios illustrated well how ideas could be implemented and how those changes can have a positive impact on the workplace and those who work there.

Chapter themes include: who owns the worker, who owns the job, who owns the organization, coercion and compliance, control and resignation, domination and submission, we are family, well-oiled machine, and democracy at work. There is also a conclusion that shares some about the types of power: coercive, competitive, cooperative and creative. I should also mention “Imagine A Workplace” which begins and ends the book. I really liked these parts of the book. I can’t help but wonder what organizations and workplaces would be like if everyone read these two pages every morning and actually acted on it. Idealistic? Maybe, but reading this and working towards it every day would surely do wonders for the organizations that tried it. Each chapter also includes specific tips for employees and specific tips for managers related to the lesson in that chapter. I liked that he addresses people in these different positions, because it really is up to everyone to create a positive work environment and culture.

The book is well written, interesting, and full of practical advice. Moreland has been there and done it, and it shows. The guide is for managers, employees, and readers to learn how to create a positive work culture and eliminate or correct dysfunctional patterns that create negative work environments.

This book is intended for those who work in companies that have typical management structures, such as employees, managers, and later upper-level management. It really focuses on the ground floor and how mid-level managers and employees can create a positive work environment and culture. If you work in such an environment, check out this book, read it, and implement the ideas. Everyone in the office will benefit.
