Horseshoes versus cornhole bean toss

There are many games you can play on a picnic, in the park, or on a camping trip, and two of them that are played often and have been for decades are horseshoes and cornhole toss. You may not even recognize that these are real games, but they can be bought in stores and some people even get a bit competitive with them.

So if you’re getting ready to pack for a day or week out of life, you might be wondering which game to take: horseshoes versus cornhole bean toss. Both have their virtues and are very similar in some respects, but not everyone likes both.

If you have never really played horseshoes, it is played in a hole, usually sand, with two metal stakes that are placed between 20 and 40 feet apart, usually depending on the age of the people playing. Obviously, the main difference between horseshoes and the cornhole bean toss is the weight of the horseshoe. Horseshoes are heavy metal objects and throwing them can be challenging, even for an adult.

You cast the horseshoe underneath, expecting it to fall around the stake at the other end of the well, scoring more if it actually comes in contact with the stake. This sounds simple enough, but it is a difficult game and requires a lot of practice.

On the other hand, when you are considering horseshoes vs. bean toss, bean bags are much lighter and not dangerous. The downside to this game is that a large board, which is usually made of wood, is required as the objective. Once again, you stay away from the target and try to throw the bean bag through the holes in the board. You can choose how far you want to throw and generally games that involve younger children are played closer to the board.

Although you could say that horseshoe tossing versus cornhole bean tossing is simply a matter of personal taste, there are some logistical considerations with each of them. If you are going somewhere without sand, you may have problems with your shoes. Also, if you are trying to lighten your load, the bean bag toss will definitely be the best option. On the other hand, carrying a large board to a park or on a camping trip can be uncomfortable, so horseshoes can be at least easier to transport, though not lighter.

Many people think of beanbag tossing as a kid’s version of horseshoes, when in fact it can be just as challenging for adults. If you want to make a more difficult bean bag toss game, just back off or try using your non-dominant hand. There are many variations of this game that can be used to make it not only more fun but also more competitive for everyone. All in all, they’re both great games for the whole family to play outside.
