Grape Growing: 3 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Growing Grapes

Growing grapes is one of the most promising and exciting outdoor hobbies that one can overlook. It’s fun, challenging, and best of all rewarding in the sense that once you have a fully grown grape farm or grape garden, you will enjoy the benefits of having fresh wine grapes to eat at your convenience. Also, since growing grapes is an outdoor hobby, it will force you to get out of your lazy chair and go outside and truly become one with nature.

Growing grapes, while appealing to most because of the delicious home grown wine grapes, can be quite challenging at times. There are some common mistakes that many new grape growers make. I’d like to briefly cover them with you now.

Common mistake n. 1 in growing grapes:

One of the most common grape growing mistakes new gardeners make is buying already grown vines and planting them in your garden. Here is the problem that lies in this situation. Your local nursery will buy vines in bulk for a low price and put them up for sale. They will look very pretty in the nursery since they have just been brought in. However, what you, the customer, do not know is that these vines come from different parts of the country, places where in fact the vines grew really healthy and strong.

You see, the climate and the atmosphere play a key role in the success of grape growing. When growing grapes in different parts of the country, you can expect totally different results with your vines. The different climate alone will affect the types of diseases that can affect your vines or when, if at all, they will bear the best fruit. Therefore, do not be fooled by what they sell you in the nursery. It is best to tell an expert how to grow grapes and understand how the climate in your area will affect your vines.

Common mistake n. 2 in growing grapes:

The second most common mistake made when growing grapes is the urge to spray.

I understand that it is frustrating to see some insects on your vines and it can get quite irresistible to avoid spraying your vines clean. Well, don’t go too happy. There are many other procedures you can use to keep your vines under pest control. Fumigation should only be used when really necessary because you can risk killing everything else in the area that would normally have controlled those pesky pests.

Common mistake n. 3 in growing grapes:

Finally we come to the third most common mistake of growing grapes. This involves planting vines without learning how to train vines first. That is like buying a car without knowing how to drive. Vines require proper training and pruning for them to grow successfully and most novice gardeners just don’t understand that growing grapes requires more than planting a few vine seeds and watering them every day.

Growing grapes can start from a fun hobby to a full-time career. However, it takes some skill and knowledge to be successful in growing grapes. Otherwise, you will probably make some of the costly rookie mistakes mentioned above.
