Experience the beauty and wonder of the California coast

California has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world that stretches for 1,100 miles. It has attracted millions of travelers and inspired dozens of books, each describing different ways to experience the coast and it’s no wonder, with the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, the majestic mountains and sheer cliffs that define its boundaries, and the huge towering redwoods. above the head is difficult to resist. Even the harshest critics will be mesmerized.

There is something deeply moving about standing on the edge of a cliff looking out at the vast Pacific Ocean, feeling the wind pushing past you and listening to the waves crashing below. My husband and I were lucky enough to experience this sensation recently in countless places along the coast. We did a round trip coastal drive from the bottom of California to the top and parts of Oregon. We stopped on the way to visit family and in total our trip lasted 11 days. We tried to see and do as much as we could, but we still missed so much more.

Here are some highlights from our trip (things to see, do and eat) that might help give you some ideas for your next vacation. For more ideas and detailed information on the California coast, check out Lonely Planet’s guide to the California coast. We added many sights and activities to our schedule that are outlined in this book.

Carlsbad, Calif.

If you’re looking for a beach vibe that’s young and hip but still family-oriented, check out Carlsbad, CA. There are many activities on the beach, as well as shops and excellent restaurants. Speaking of dining, enjoy Mexican food at Fidel’s. Our service was fine, but the food was fast and pretty good. I recommend the fried pinto beans.

Marin County, CA (North of San Francisco, CA)

There is so much to see in Marin County, but some places we particularly enjoy are the Marine Mammal Center, Muir Beach Overlook, Point Reyes National Seashore, Point Reyes Lighthouse, and Earthquake Walk. There are some truly amazing sights in this area and if you’re interested in marine animal rescue or marine biology, check out the Marine Mammal Center. There are tours of the facility and all the employees are very knowledgeable.

If you like frozen yogurt, you should try ‘yogen fruz’ frozen yogurt shop in Novato. We had to make a special stop on the way home just for this frozen yogurt.

Healdsburg, Calif.

Healdsburg is such a beautiful city. It has a very relaxed and comfortable feel. There are specialty shops, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, bookstores, coffee shops and more along the downtown streets. Stop by Copperfield’s Books and grab a bite to eat at Bovolo Restaurant. Unfortunately it was closed and we couldn’t eat there, but I’ve heard great reviews. We ate at the Baci Cafe & Wine Bar. It has a relaxing atmosphere, great service, and delicious food.

Leggett, CA

Have you ever driven through a tree before? Well then, this is your chance. Visit the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree Park and drive through the Chandelier Tree. It is 315 feet tall and over 2000 years old. If you’re driving a midsize or larger SUV, I’d suggest checking to see if the side view mirrors fold in. It can get a bit tight. Be sure to take a photo passing by first as it is a one way road.

Klamath, CA

Visit the Mystery Trees and say hello to Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe. Take the gondola ride up to the treetops and take in the views. If you are a strong hiker go down the hill but be careful there are about 6 steep 45 degree inclines. Many have come to the start with scraped elbows and knees. Take home a living memory: a redwood or burl.

Jedidiah Smith State Redwoods Park (10 miles north of Crescent City, CA)

This is the northernmost redwood park and is filled with some of the most magnificent redwood giants. Take one of the hiking trails to get a real idea of how big these trees are. You may find that the area is familiar to you. The Endor scenes for Star Wars “Return of the Jedi” were filmed at the park. Think of the Ewoks.

I could go on and on and still touch the surface. If you’re considering a California vacation, I recommend taking time to enjoy the coast, even if you can only visit parts of it. You will not regret.
