Cabinet Refinishing: A Money-Saving Project

There are very few items in a home that cannot be easily replaced when it comes time for an upgrade. Bathtubs and cabinets are the two main things that come to mind when faced with this problem. While the tub can be resurfaced, you’ll need to hire a professional to do it, as I’m not aware of any do-it-yourself processes available for a project like this. However, restoring cabinets is something the average homeowner can do themselves at very little cost compared to replacing cabinets.

Of course, the first question you need to answer when considering cabinet renovation is whether or not you like the style of your existing cabinets. If your answer is yes, then your cabinets are candidates for refinishing. However, there is one other thing you need to consider before you begin. Check to make sure the condition of your existing cabinets is worth keeping. Check all corner joints for tightness, doors and drawers for warping and working smoothly, and look under sinks for water damage from leaking pipes. If you find any issues with these items, make a decision as to whether or not repair is an option, or whether it would be better to replace the cabinets. Sometimes cabinets, like other items, reach a point where they simply can’t be repaired.

If you determine that your cabinets are in good condition and you’re happy with the style, now you can start your fun. Now would be a good time to take a trip to your local kitchen design center or home improvement store. There you will find the look and finishes that are available in modern cabinet design. No matter what look you choose, you should be able to duplicate it without having to replace any part of your cabinetry. While you’re there, check out the accessories that are available for the inside of the cabinets. Now is a great time to update your cabinet interiors with things like trash or recycling drawers, a pots and pans rack or drawers, or the other available items. You should also consider replacing all of the cabinet hardware as this will help to get the new look you are looking for.

When you’ve made up your mind about the look you want to achieve, take your idea and a cabinet door to a paint supply store. For best results when restoring cabinets, you will need to use the correct finishing materials and application methods. The best place to get advice on these will be a painting supply store where the employees do nothing but deal with painting projects on a daily basis. Also, remember that you are likely saving thousands of dollars on this project by not having to replace your cabinets. Spend some of those savings on high-quality primers, paints or stains, as well as the tools needed to apply those finishing products. By doing so, you’ll find that you’ll get a much better result, giving you a finish that will stand up to the daily wear and tear that most cabinets must endure.
