American Mobsters – Louis Pioggi (Louie the Lump) – The Man Who Killed Kid Twist

Louis Pioggi, affectionately called Louie the Lump, was a diminutive and elegant Italian member of the Five Point Gang, who threw himself into the spotlight one starry night in Coney Island, when he killed the life of Kind Twist, the former Monk Eastman’s boss. Lower East Side Jewish gang. The Twist gang and the Five Pointers were in a constant battle for Lower East Side rackets, and under Twist’s reign, his gang had made great strides into Five Pointer territory. The anger was so great between the two gangs that it made the Hatfields and McCoys look like choir boys singing in a church.

Born in 1889 on the Lower East Side, Pioggi was basically a footnote in the history of the American gangster. He was a little timekeeper who, as fate would have it, fell in love with the same ballroom girl, the most illustrious Kid Twist (Maxwell Zwerbach) that he saw on the side.

In the early 1900s, it was customary for gangsters with more than a few dollars in their pockets to break free from dumpsters and dives on the Lower East Side and “go out into town” to the wonderful expanses. from Coney Island in Brooklyn. On May 14, 1908, Pioggi traveled to Coney to see Carroll Terry, a beautiful Coney Island dancer. which was Twist’s usual squeeze. Unknown to Pioggi, Twist was also in Coney Island to see Miss Terry, and was accompanied by her bodyguard Cyclone Louie, real name Vach Lewis. Cyclone Louie was an assassin to Twist, but he was best known as a strongman from the Coney Island circus, who bent large pieces of steel around his neck for a living.

Pioggi went to the ballroom where Terry worked and encouraged her to dance with him, which was her job anyway. Pioggi fell hopelessly in love and before leaving, he begged Terry to promise that he would return to New York with him after his shift ended. Saying anything to get rid of Pioggi, Terry said he would, but only if Pioggi left immediately, so he could do his job without his undue interference.

The real reason Terry gave Pioggi the rush was because he expected to see Kid Twist dwarf. And he did, when moments after Pioggi left, Twist and Cyclone Louie made their grand entrance. She joined them at a table and after a few drinks her lips loosened and she told Twist about Pioggi’s love advances. Soon after, Pioggi returned to the ballroom and saw Twist holding Terry’s hand, and Cyclone Louie standing guard. Knowing that he had been caught, Pioggi ducked into a dive on Surf Avenue to drown his sorrows on the second floor of the living room. Minutes later, Twist and Cyclone Louie burst into the room and confronted Pioggi.

“I just saw Carroll,” Twist said. “And she said you’re on the biggest ass she knows. So she says you’re a fucking asset, always jumping. Let’s see how active you are.” Twist pointed to the open window. “Jump throught the window.”

Now Pioggi wasn’t in the mood for the seven-meter dive, but when Twist made a move toward the revolver on his belt, Pioggi quickly jumped out the window. He landed on all fours and later discovered that he had broken his ankle. Pioggi limped to a phone and called Paul Kelly, the boss of the Five Points gang. Pioggi told Kelly what had happened regarding Kid Twist.

“I have to cook it,” Pioggi told Kelly.

Kelly agreed with Pioggi’s assessment. “You sure have to cook it,” Kelly said. “I will send a fleet down. When my boys arrive, you will catch these tramps in the street and open with your cannons.”

Kelly’s boys arrived an hour later and when they did, they saw Twist and Cyclone Louie having a great time in Terry’s ballroom, laughing and talking loudly about Pioggi’s daring plunge. Terry had been off the premises for a while and was nowhere to be seen. Pioggi sent a boy inside with a note telling Twist that Terry was waiting for him outside. As soon as they reached the sidewalk, Twist head a voice called out to him from the side. “This way, Kid,” Pioggi yelled. Before Twist could react, Pioggi shoved one into his head and killed him instantly. Cyclone Louie gaped for a second, then started running. Pioggi and the Five Pointers chased after him, firing bullets at a blinding rate. Finally, with five shots to the chest and back, Cyclone Louie fell dead like a stone to the pavement.

Pioggi, still outraged, refused to stop shooting. As luck would have it, Terry showed up seconds later, and just for fun, Pioggi hit him on the hip. Terry fell on top of the dead Twist, but lived to dance another day. When Pioggi got into an escape car, a policeman appeared on the scene. Pioggi fired again. This bullet knocked the helmet off the policeman’s head, but otherwise did not harm him.

Pioggi ran away and went into hiding, while Kelly contacted Tammany Hall to see if she could negotiate a favorable deal with Pioggi.

A few days later, Pioggi turned himself in and pleaded guilty to murder. He also testified that he had acted entirely alone, which was quite untrue on his part, as dozens of people had seen the Coney Island executions.

Pioggi was sentenced to eleven months in Elmira State Prison. He left the court with contempt. “What is eleven months?” Pioggi said. “I could do that standing over my head.”
